If honesty is always the best policy, how come we don’t always get it?
A person’s own words often reveal much more than what he or she intended. But in order to assess this deeper revelation, an interviewer must be trained in forensic language analysis, such as the Scientific Content Analysis (SCAN) technique.
SCAN studies speech patterns, signs of deception by analyzing the structure and contents of statements. An independent evaluation by the UK Home Office revealed that investigators trained in the SCAN method are 44% better at detecting deceptive statements than their untrained colleagues.
The beauty of this technique lies in its ability to quickly direct your focus to important areas in a statement that requires clarification. The analysis is then used to guide their interview strategies, enabling them to ask penetrating follow-up questions, clarify statements made, or probe missing details from an interviewee’s narrative account.
This 2-day course, which covers basic (Day 1) and advanced (Day 2) skills, is facilitated by a SCAN expert. She is 1 of only 5 in the world trained to teach the SCAN technique. She has conducted training for the FBI and US military, among many other military, enforcement and investigative agencies around the world.
